UP Cong all set for major revamp

After the debacle in the Assembly elections, and ahead of the next parliamentary election, the Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee (UPCC) is all set for a major revamp of district level party committees.

Having completed their reviews at the district and block levels, the zonal presidents and vice-presidents of UPCC are ready to submit their reports to committee president Nirmal Khatri by November 30. Khatri had divided Uttar Pradesh in eight organisational zones and named a president and vice-president for each of them. The presidents and vice-presidents were asked to review their district level committees and submit reports for reorganisation.

"We are trying to complete the process of revamping at the district level by December first week. The presidents and vice-presidents of the zones have been given a free hand in deciding whether the district and block level party committees need revamping or not," said Khatri.

Senior party leader and MP, PL Punia, who is also the president of zone seven said that there definitely is a "necessity of change" at the district level party organisation. "We are looking at whether the present district presidents are suitable or not," he added.

For strengthening the party structure at the district level, the zonal presidents were asked to identify sincere workers and those district level office bearers who are facing a lack of support or have failed to perform. "Those office bearers who are not performing well or not doing their duties will be removed from their posts in this revamp," said Aslam Raini, vice-president of zone eight.

"We have found many party workers who are working hard but are unable to come to the forefront. For example, those who enrolled members in the membership drive are nowhere in the district committees while those who have not done much are on important posts," said Vivek Singh, MLA and president of zone four.

The zonal presidents have also been asked to promote youths and women at the district level and activate the frontal organisation of Congress, said Singh. Once the structural reorganisation at districts are completed, the new district committees will be asked to constitute the block level committees and the zonal presidents will work with these grassroot committees to promote various activities at the districts.
