LUCKNOW, SEPTEMBER 22 : The Delhi Police have blamed the Terror attacks in Uttar Pradesh on the Indian Mujahideen (IM) module that they busted last week, raising questions on the investigations carried out by the state police here. While the UP Police have chargesheeted different persons in these cases, the IM does not find mention anywhere. Instead, the HuJI has been blamed for the blasts.

Asked about the contradictions, UP’s Additional Director General of Police Brij Lal said: “Investigation are still on. A team of the Anti-Terrorist Squad has been dispatched to question the persons arrested by the Delhi Police. Let’s see what details they provide to our team.”

Thirteen persons were killed in these blasts on November 23 last year. The UP Police blamed HuJI activists, and arrested four suspected activists. Trial has begun in the Faizabad case, while the chargesheet has been filed in the Lucknow blast. The Delhi Police have said the bomb in Lucknow was planted by Arif and Junaid — both absconding; in Faizabad, it was Shahzad and Shadab alias Malik — both absconding; and in Varanasi, it was Mohammad Saif and Sajid. Mohammad Tariq Qasmi, a Unani doctor, was said to have led the team in Faizabad, while Mohammad Khalid Mujahid, a madrasa teacher, was suspected to be behind the Lucknow bomb. Both have been arrested. Two other accused—Sajjar Rehman and Mohammad Akhtar—were arrested from Jammu and Kashmir. The UP Police said three other accused—Zahid, Qadir and Imran Guru—were absconding.

Varanasi blasts

Two blasts took place in Varanasi on March 7, 2006 — one at the Sankatmochan Temple and the other at the Cantonment railway station. As many as 20 persons were killed. The UP Police have filed a chargesheet, and the trial is on. The Delhi Police said Atif, who was killed in the Jamia Nagar encounter, Saif, Malik and Junaid carried out the blasts. But the UP Police claim that HuJI member Waliullah, Imam of a mosque in Phoolpur town of Allahabad district, was the mastermind, and the blasts were executed by three persons with whom he had studied at Deoband. They were...
