  • The UP government on Friday gave its assent for prosecuting BJP MP from Pilibhit Varun Gandhi for his inflammatory speech in the district made on March 8. The Government’s nod paves the way for a chargesheet to be filed against the MP.

The decision came after the Pilibhit district administration received a report from the Forensic Science Laboratory in Chandigarh confirming that the voice in the recording was Varun Gandhi's. "The government has given the sanction to prosecute Varun Gandhi in the case. The report has been sent to the Pilibhit district administration," Secretary (Home) Mahesh Gupta said.

Pilibhit SP, Prakash D confirmed that the police was waiting for formal orders to file a chargesheet under section 153 A (promoting enmity between different groups on ground of religion) of the Indian Penal Code against Varun.

Two separate FIRs, the first by the district police and the second by the District Magistrate, were lodged at the Barkhera police station against the BJP leader for delivering an inflammatory speech in Pilibhit's Barkhera area. Varun is currently out on bail.
