The state government has moved local courts of Rampur to withdraw four criminal cases against Urban Development Minister Mohammad Azam Khan, which were lodged in different police stations of the district in 2007. In all four cases, the police had filed chargesheets against Azam Khan and other accused.

Rampur's senior prosecuting officer Rajesh Saxena confirmed on Monday that applications to withdraw the four cases had been filed in relevant courts.

A case against Azam Khan was lodged after he allegedly made 'objectionable' remarks against a particular caste at a public meeting organised at Tanda town in Rampur on August 7, 2007. He was booked under various sections of the IPC, including those dealing with intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace, and violation of the SC, ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, at Tanda police station. The Rampur police investigated and filed the chargesheet on March 3, 2009.

Another case was lodged against Khan and others at Kotwali police station on June 14, 2007, for criminal breach of trust, and use of assault or criminal force. It was registered after an incident which took place when Khan's

supporters distributed some sewing machines which had allegedly been bought with public money before the change of government in May 2007. In this case, the chargesheet was filed on October 27, 2007.

Two cases against Azam Khan were lodged at Azimnagar police station in June 2007. On June 28, one Mahipal Singh lodged an FIR against Azam Khan and one S Khan, accusing them of blocking the movement in Aliaganj locality by reportedly building a wall. The case was registered under Section 431 of the IPC (mischief by injury to public road, bridge, river or channel). The police filed chargesheet against them on October 25, 2010. The other case was filed on June 23 by one Abrar who accused Azam Khan and S Khan of thrashing them. In this case, the police filed chargesheet on October 29, 2007.
