The Uttar Pradesh Irrigation department has allegedly threatened to close its water supply to Delhi for not clearing the outstanding dues of Rs 5.34 crore pending since last year.
The Superintending Engineer of UP Irrigation department, K P Singh, told reporters in Muzaffarnagar that the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) has sent only Rs 1.13 crore against the total outstanding amount of Rs 6.47 crore pending against it since last year.
DJB chief executive officer Ramesh Negi told Newsline that the matter was being looked into. “We are working out the modalities and there is nothing to panic,” he said.
Singh, meanwhile, has said a letter has been sent to DJB to clear the dues immediately and if the civic body fails to pay the amount, water supply from the Ganga canal may be closed soon.
Delhi gets 300 to 377 cusecs of drinking water per day from the Ganga canal.
