A day after a body claiming to represent the principals of government-aided colleges across the state issued a diktat banning wearing of jeans by girls in colleges, the state government today sent out a stern message to district magistrates and vice-chancellors asking them to ensure that no such instructions were enforced in any college in their jurisdiction.

On Tuesday, the Department of Higher Education asked the DMs and VCs to ensure that the institutions that had issued such instructions either withdraw these or face action, said Kamran Rizvi,Secretary,Higher Education.

A day earlier,Uttar Pradesh Pracharya Parishad had said it had decided to prohibit wearing of jeans by girls in order to curb “eve-teasing”. Parishad spokesman Ashok Kumar Srivastava had described jeans as “a provocative dress” and said,“It has been seen that eve-teasers generally target girls wearing jeans or modern clothes.” However, several college principals had refused to accept the Parishad decision. Lucknow University Associated Colleges Principal Association President Dr SP Singh had even called it a “Talibani farman”.

Earlier, principals of four girls’ colleges in Kanpur had issued similar instructions. Rizvi said the Parishad was not recognised by the government. Also,it did not have any state-wide presence and, therefore, their decision held no significance. “However, since we have come to know that such dress codes for girls are being enforced in some colleges,we have decided to issue orders asking district administrations as well VCs to see that these are not implemented in their respective areas,” said Rizvi.

The Kanpur principals had claimed they had issued the instructions in the interest of students and the institutions.
