Uproar over mayor’s comment on conditional distribution of medicines

Ahmedabad Mayor Kanaji Thakor upset many on Thursday when he said that the victims must prove that they had consumed spurious liquor before claiming free medicines.

Ahmedabad Mayor Kanaji Thakor upset many on Thursday when he said that the victims must prove that they had consumed spurious liquor before claiming free medicines. Timely intervention by Municipal Commissioner I P Gautam prevented the ruling and opposition members from coming to blows.

Terming this as unfortunate and inhuman,Congress Councillor Hasan Khan Pathan said that taking such a stand was a matter of shame and unbecoming of the august office of the city mayor who was requested to grant free medicines to poor victims who had no money for immediate treatment.

Pathan said things took an ugly turn when the opposition members accused the state government of failing to maintain law and order in the current situation and dared the BJP members to visit the affected areas if they felt the allegation was baseless.

Gautam had to intervene to control the situation,he said.

“What is even more shocking is to know that the ruling party has issued gag orders to the hospital authorities over furnishing any information or figures,” said AMC Congress leader Surendra Baxi, who was arrested during a demonstration in Amraiwadi ward along with former mayor Himmatsinh Patel,Gangaram Prajapati and Arvind Chauhan.

Refuting the allegations, committee chairman Asit Vora said the opposition members were only acting as per the guidelines issued from their party. The possibility of chaos cannot be avoided while handling such a delicate situation,he said.

Meanwhile,an official release from the AMC said that elaborate arrangements for ventilators and other equipment have been made by procuring additional equipment from other hospitals. So far,29 victims have been put under dialysis with the help from Kidney Disease Hospital and U N Mehta Hospital. It said the municipal commissioner had been camping at the SCL Hospital since the morning and held detailed meetings with senior officials from the state government.
