  • Military base shootout
An US army sergeant comforts his wife as they wait outside the Fort Hood Army Base. Their 3-year old son is still in daycare on the base.

A US Army psychiatrist, apparently disgruntled at being deployed in Iraq, went on a "horrific" shooting spree targeting fellow soldiers at America's largest military base near Houston, leaving 12 persons dead and 31 injured, in the worst mass killing ever at a US defence post.

The gunman was identified as 39-year old Major Nidal Malik Hasan, an American national of Jordanian descent, who was about to be deployed to Iraq, officials at the Fort Hood military base in St Antonio in central Texas, said.

Hasan opened fire with two handguns at a military processing centre, where soldiers go for a last-minute medical check up before being sent on deployment.

The soldiers were making their final preparations for deployment to Iraq, Fort Hood's base commander Lt Gen Bob Cone told reporters late last evening.

The attacker was shot several times in exchange of fire and was captured. "His death is not imminent," said Cone.

Military officials said that the soldier attacked other troops at the Soldier Readiness Processing Center and the adjacent Howze Theater on the sprawling Central Texas post.

Ten of those killed were soldiers, Cone said.

Two other soldiers were taken into custody but later released after being interviewed.

Cone did not speculate about a motive, but the Army released a statement saying it did not believe the shootings were an act of political terrorism.

The incident that sent shock waves across the country was termed by Obama as "a horrific outburst of violence".

"It is difficult enough when we lose these brave Americans in battles overseas... It is horrifying that they should come under fire at an Army base on American soil," Obama said in Washington.

    ... contd.

Why army only?By: Jas | 07-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward If muslims think they are all brothers and mistrust every body else, how can they be trusted(or should they be trusted) by others anywhere else, let alone the army. People of the world must understand that Islam justify the killing of non-believers/infidels.
sadBy: moobi | 07-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward I scan the posts and can't help but see a pattern: the posters just can't keep their own biases and self-interests out of their opinions. i can't help but feel sadness for this lot who descended from the Greats who gave us the ancient philosophies.
RELIGIOUS BIGOTRYBy: CDA KUNJU | 07-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward Sir, 1. Truly a tragic incident where a misguided/or indoctrinated psyhicatrist resorting to massacre the hapless and the innocents. Unfortunately, this gentleman considers his religion is everything and ready to sacrifice his life for the perceived notion of religious persecution. If this is the mindset of a highly qualfied professional doctor that's too, a psychiatrist what would be the feelings of an unlettered person. Killing in the name of God whom they consider as the supreme one!
US Army major kills 12By: Shadi Katyal | 07-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward Any time when a person forgets that he is first a citizen of a nation and his religion is very personal, this kind of incidents will happen over and over. This man was educated on US citizen tax money and if he felt so righteous he should have resigned. One cannot understand that how religion played more important part. It is not true that he was taunted or given any hard times but being a Muslim he must have been asked in his mosque as he went in uniform for prayer that how could he fight for the infidel. He was there to heal others and yet he could notheal himself. as long as we continue3 to put our religion ahead of everything else this kind of incidents will happen. It is a challenge to humanity to either accept the nation you belong to be loyal or be first a Muslim and than American. we are seeing the same situation in India with Deobundi passing Fatwa on Vande Matram and we all must dig deep into our thinking on this matter. Vande Mateem is not national anthem but homage to mother
Ban the Hate LiteratureBy: Village Boy | 07-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward If a country so rich, free and fair as America cannot win the loyalty of the true believers of the "religion of peace", what hope India could have winning over the hearts of multitude of millions of infidel-haters, multiplying exponentially as anywhere else. It is about time to quarantine the believers in the caves of Afganistan and the deserts of middle east, to the save the civilized humanity form the mental disease called Islam. The source of the islamic virus, Koran must also be banned to stop the spread of the virus. The merciful guy in the sky who arranges for 72 virgins for a believer who blow-up infidels, should be renamed as 'dalal'.
