US panel puts India under scanner for 'religious violence'

  • The US Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) plans to announce later today that it has placed India on its watch list because of its "inadequate" response to religious violence, particularly against the country's Muslim and Christian minorities.

USCIRF is an independent US agency whose job is to make sure religious freedom is taken into account in US foreign policy. Its watch list consists of countries with governments that tolerate "serious violations of religious freedom".

It is likely to annoy the State Department, which has long complained that foreign government mistakenly believe that the commission makes US policy. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton visited India last month, when the countries announced agreements to strengthen a relationship that has dramatically improved in recent years.

There are already signs that USCIRF's decision to place India on its watch list could cause problems between the US and India. Some of the eight members of USCIRF had planned a June trip to the country to look into reports of religious violence, but their applications for visas were turned down.

In an interview, USCIRF chairman Leonard Leo rejected the warnings that placing India on the watch list would jeopardise US-Indian relations.

SahuBy: Ashok | 13-Oct-2009 Reply | Forward USCIRF has 7 christians, one Jew and one Muslim as its members and looks into the international freedom as a self-proclaimed guardian of seculrism.Of late, it has come out with its report on the state of religious minorities in India including the Christians in Orissa and Muslims in Gujrat.India has a Constitution that gurantees Freedom of Religion, a Free Press and an independent Judiciary. To further protect the minorities interest there are National Human Rights Commision and National Minorities Commision. The last President of India was a Muslim and the ruling coalition is led by an Italy born Catholic Christian. It has a Sikh Prime Minister and a Muslim Vice-President. Does the USA has any such combination of multireligious and multicultural dignitaries at their National or Federal level? Till that let the USA not preach what seculrism is to the most tolerant India. We are proud that the Christian and Muslim minorities feel protected by the majority Hindus in our country.
OFFENSIVE WORDSBy: N.V.SANKARAN | 16-Aug-2009 Reply | Forward I tried to post my comments on this subject. But, it was not accepted saying my post contained offensive words. I wonder what is the meaning of "offensive words" in Indian Express's dictionary!!!!!
RacialismBy: Hero Vaz | 14-Aug-2009 Reply | Forward Racialism that is practised by the whites, who are almost all Christans, is most unchristian and universally condemnable. The UN should set up a Commission to go into racial abuse, racial discrimination and other prejudicial racial practices.

Indian Media is full of fools as editors Ooooops! Infection of foolishness. By: Foolish Indian Editors | 14-Aug-2009 Reply | Forward What is the necessity for bringing up these "report" written by some jobless jackal mentalities and airing it in the TV and publishing it in the newspapers as if this is the most important news for the Indian people. For quite some time our media rooms and newspapers are infested with an unusual level of foolishness by prankster journos and editors. "obama did this","obama did that", "hillarry said this", "US thinks like this", "US report says this" , "US report says that" can be found most often in the Indian media even though many are unrelated to the Indian society. As if Obama is a God send angel whose words as are good as holy diamonds than any. As if US is the gospel authority for the entire world who has been appointed as the certifying authority for almost everything in this universe. We in a consortium are working on a campaign to individualy thread pick journos and editors who are much invoving themselves in USising Indian society. We may fling individual abuses to them too.
