President Barack Obama on Friday won the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize for "his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between people," the Norwegian Nobel Committee said.

"Only very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world's attention and given its people hope for a better future," the committee said. "His diplomacy is founded in the concept that those who are to lead the world must do so on the basis of values and attitudes that are shared by the majority of the world's population."

Obama's name had been mentioned in speculation before the award but many Nobel watchers believed it was too early to award the president.

The committee said it attached special importance to Obama's vision of and work for a world without nuclear weapons.

"Obama has as president created a new climate in international politics. Multilateral diplomacy has regained a central position, with emphasis on the role that the United Nations and other international institutions can play."

Whats wrong with Obama getting one?By: Josh E | 20-Oct-2009 Reply | Forward America never started this war it was forced apont them when 9/11 happened. I have alot of respect for Obama in what he is actually trying to achive aleast he unlike many other governments has tried to make something good happen in this world that seems to be rapidly spiraling out of control.
Obama and peaceBy: ooosij | 12-Oct-2009 Reply | Forward Oh please this is the most ridiculous thing i have ever seen... first off nobel prize is not won on good intentions but on actually doing something. My other problem is that US is involved in two wars right now and Obama wins a nobel prize... whatever happend to pulling out troops from Iraq and Afghanistan in the first 100 days of the presidency... more empty promises.

Good for empowerment in gooddeedBy: Khem Regmi | 11-Oct-2009 Reply | Forward Many have doubted over his deal but it is good persuasion to move forward. The significance of honoring after his work sounds less important and never inspires him in his duty but the prize in the beginning of his policy and diplomacy in order to reduce the atomic and newclear weaponry is highly regarding works unlike former president Bush. The decision of Nobel committee is very procreative and promoting the anti war senniment. Any peace lovers welcomes this reward for President Obama. It is the beginning of really nice work. After completing works or after the death honoring is nonsense. So what the Nobel committee did is praiseworthy step.
