US seeks India help to deal with North Korea

Obama official said the two countries have discussed North Korea in their bilateral,multilateral exchanges.

The United States has been discussing with India the issue of North Korea to broaden region-wide efforts to compel Pyongyang to abide by its denuclearisation commitments and obligations,a top Obama Administration official said today.

“The United States and India have discussed North Korea in our Strategic Dialogue and other bilateral and multilateral exchanges,” the Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs Kurt Campbell said in his testimony before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

“India’s growing security and political relations with Japan and South Korea will also enhance prospects for security and stability in Northeast Asia,” Campbell said in his testimony on N Korea,that he identified as one of the most enduring foreign policy challenges.

Campbell said in addition to the five key parties including South Korea,Japan,China and Russia,the US is working more closely with other stakeholders like the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN),India,and Australia to broaden region-wide efforts to compel North Korea to abide by its denuclearisation commitments and obligations,as well as with the UN Security Council.

“India and Australia also share our goal of enhancing peace and security in the Asia-Pacific,” he said.
