Some of the best American universities and educational institutes are "extremely interested" in coming to India and are eagerly waiting for the relevant law to be put in place so that they can move forward, Human Resource Development Minister, Kapil Sibal, has said.

"They are not only extremely interested, but they are also proactive in expressing their hope that the law (in India) would be put in place very soon so that actually they can come forward and come to India as foreign education providers," Sibal told Indian reporters, winding up his week-long visit to the US last evening.

During his visit to New York and Washington, Sibal met presidents of a number of best US universities, including those of the Harvard University, Boston University, Yale University and MIT.

He also met US Secretary for Education, Arny Duncan and the two leaders agreed to establish a US-India Education Council, which would comprise top American academicians, university officials and representatives from other educational institutions so as to promote public-private partnership in India's higher education sector.

Sibal yesterday had a roundtable with representatives of other top US universities from various parts of the country; besides meeting eminent Indian-American academicians and a delegation of PANIIT.

Describing his visit as "exceptionally satisfying", the minister said that during his meetings he explained that "we are reforming our education system and setting up a number of educational institutions.

"We also indicated to them we are hopefully going to introduce the Foreign Education Providers' bill as and when it gets cleared from the Cabinet."

    ... contd.

Foreign Universities in IndiaBy: Aashish | 01-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward It suits that Mr. Sibal is beating the drums about foreign universities coming to India. Since his law practice has gone for a toss owing to political commitments, he needs big money that he is used to. Gather this: If the top US universities come to India, they would require the best faculty in India. If we talk about engineering faculty, they would be targeting IIT professors. Now these professors would be glad to join such universities as Mr. Sibal has ensured that they get paid at par with degree college teachers. There goes the dignity! It sure is pretty well planned out. Dusgruntled IIT professors would eventually end up teaching for the US universities who set up shop in India.
Indians should open schools in the USBy: Hero Vaz | 01-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward Before American universities come to India, Indians should open schools in America to raise the standard of school education in the US.

sibals visit By: mkapoor | 01-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward I have an interview with Mr Sibal when he was at MIT this week His speech was so derogative of India education system , it was unbelivable whethter he could justify himself as the HR Minister. He avoided all the questions that probed further into the reasons why he wants US universities to come to India. MIT Philip Khoury ridiculed India's university by bringing a blind boy from AP who is currently at MIT and made him speak for over 5 minutes how India's IIT did not let him take the exam, something like Boyle's Slumdog syndrome.I would like to also report that today we are having a Global Liver Conference and I have been interviewing people , and most people consider India's education of extremely high standard and infact a scientist from a University in India who is now in UK was awarded with his group one of the Poster awards.I would like to have access to publish my interviews on video and in print and would like to hear from the editor of the paper or other readers

us universities in IndiaBy: Varuni | 01-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward That is all very well for higher end of town. But what about the lower end? there are only 11% of Indian kids attending school. What id Mr. Sibal doing about it after receiving the report. I dont see thinking for mass education even such things are negaropontes laptop for every child or using satellite to deliver education to children or use of mobile schools to teach kids in remote locations. It is all very well to cater tothe top end of town when the foundation of the building itself is crumbling
