UT bans heavy vehicles on two roads during peak hours

Acting on a report submitted by the Chandigarh Traffic Police, the UT Administration's Home Department has banned the entry of heavy goods vehicles into two major roads in the cviy during peak traffic hours in the morning.

As per the Home Department order, which will be implemented from Sunday, heavy goods vehicles, particularly trucks and trailers, will not be allowed to enter two roads - from Transport Light Point to Fun Republic Light Point and from Transport Light Point to Tribune light point - between 8 and 10 am every morning.

" For the next two days, we will educate truck drivers and the restriction will be implemented from Sunday. Also, sign boards about the timing restrictions will also be put up on the two roads soon," the Deputy Superintendent of Police (traffic), Kamal Deep, said.

The traffic police had been waiting for the Administration's nod to enforce a permanent ban on the movement of heavy transport vehicles in the city ever since the experimental ban was lifted in January 2012.

In 2011, the then DSP (traffic), Vijay Kumar, had submitted a report recommending the banning of heavy vehicle movement in the city. "We had mentioned in the report that the restriction on heavy goods vehicles is a good idea and should be made a permanent feature," he told Newsline .

A successful experiment was then conducted by the Administration in December 2011. Superintendent of Police (SP) Traffic, Maneesh Chaudhary had received a verbal communication from the UT Home Department about a month back over whether the restriction in movement of heavy-vehicles should be made a permanent feature. The police officials had responded positively.
