UT cops plan lane driving awareness campaign

The UT police are planing to launch an education campaign in the city to create awareness among people about lane driving.

The UT police are planing to launch an education campaign in the city to create awareness among people about lane driving. It will be only after the awareness campaign that the UT police will be enforcing the lane driving in Chandigarh stringently.

“Before enforcing lane driving,we have decided to educate people as to which lane to choose for driving,” Deputy Superintendent of Police (Traffic) Vijay Kumar said. He added that the awareness about lane driving will now be part of general education programme of the traffic department that is being organised regularly.

“We will also educate the drivers of the passenger vehicles and three wheelers in the first phase the importance of lane driving,” Kumar said. “We have already been telling the drivers through the megaphones to follow the designated lanes.”

Interestingly, the only thing that the UT police has done so far to introduce lane driving in Chandigarh is that they have painted a few major roads by demarcating lanes for two-wheeler,three wheelers, four wheeler passenger and goods vehicles. But very few motorist follow the designated lanes as they fail to make it out the instructions painted on the roads.

The Punjab and Haryana High Court have also directed the UT police ensure the motorist follow the lane driving. The traffic police are planning to install overhead sign boards shortly, which will indicate as to which lane the vehicle has to take that is prevalent in the other parts of the country.

“These sign boards will ensure that motorist are able to read the instructions from a distance as to which lane is designated for them,” Kumar said. The DSP said that traffic department was also studying the various lane driving models of the major cities of the world.

“The best plan will be enforced in Chandigarh,” Kumar said.
