The members of the UT Administrators Advisory Council expressed concern at the haphazard development taking place in the periphery of the city, including the proposed housing projects. The meeting was held on Sunday under the chairmanship of Punjab Governor and UT Administrator Shivraj Patil.
The members demanded that there has to be a check on the growth in the periphery. Patil, while addressing the third meeting of the Advisory Council, said demands of projects coming up on the citys periphery were high. Once the recommendations are finalised, the governments of Punjab and Haryana will be asked to to look into the issue,he added.
The Ministry of Home Affairs had observed that some of the buildings in Chandigarh, now more than half-a-century old,are in a state of neglect. The Secretariat Building and High Court building,in particular, required attention. The Ministry had also stated that the completion of Capitol Complex must be looked into seriously.
Following this,an expert committee was constituted. In the first meeting of the committee, four sub-committees were set up to look into different aspects of heritage conservation. A few of the sub-committees presented their reports on Sunday.
Patil told the members that a holistic approach was needed to take into account the challenges of the citys demographic pressure. The issues of slum rehabilitation, traffic, parking, additional housing, additional health and educational infrastructure, drinking water and sewerage system as well as issues of periphery control, etc also need to be addressed.
