UT residents speak out against Delhi gangrape

The gangrape in Delhi has led to outrage across the country. Even in Chandigarh, a number of protests are taking place with people condemning the incident and demanding stringent action against the accused. Kanica Walia and Nikita Sharma asked some protestors about their views on the issue.

It is important to believe and say that if somebody commits a crime then he's liable to be punished. The quantum is secondary, the primary need is the fear of punishment. People have a feeling that they might just get away or who would come and lodge a complaint against them and this is what should be killed. We need to have an Act separately for such victims. There should be a special court consisting of a female judge, female defense counsel, etc so that she's given the utmost comfort when being asked personal questions. Also police should help solve the problem. The fate of the criminals should be much worse than what the girl is suffering.

I feel it is a very shameful act and should be taken very seriously. I believe the criminals should be hanged in public in order to create fear in evil minds. Laws should be made self reliant so that no criminal can escape the death penalty. It is satisfying to see the youth coming up to support the society. Everyone has to work together towards a better and healthier society.

I blame the government. The government is not really concerned, they just know how to use force against an innocent crowd that gathers to demand justice. Death sentence is not the solution but life imprisonment and treating them like dogs is. In such cases, the trial should be left to the public. It is important to make the criminals suffer.
