Utsav called for Jessica film boycott, mother says he has a mental disorder

Hours after Utsav Sharma attacked Rajesh Talwar on the court premises in Ghaziabad, his parents, both professors, said their son suffered from a mental disorder and had been undergoing treatment.

“The problem with Utsav started 3-4 years ago. It is a hereditary disease. My brother, who is now dead, was also mentally unstable. We should have let someone observe him (Utsav) while he was away from home,” said Indira Sharma,Utsav’s mother, who is a professor in the Department of Psychiatry at BHU.

Father Sushil K Sharma,an associate professor with IIT-BHU,said he would henceforth keep his son with him.

“He is on bail (in the Rathore attack case). I knew he had gone to Delhi and was attending the art exhibition that was on at Pragati Maidan. He wanted to leave Delhi after seeing the Republic Day programme,” Sharma said.

“I believe this is some kind of a personality disorder where he (Utsav) cannot see injustice done to young girls,” he said.

According to the father,Utsav, who is undergoing treatment in Ahmedabad, had been responding well to his medication. “But sitting here in Varanasi,I do not know whether he has been following his medicine regularly or not. I don’t even know whether he is with the Ghaziabad police or somewhere else. I will have to trace him first,” he said.

After the attack on Rathore, teachers at NID had said they were shocked to see the TV footage of this “reclusive, quiet and good boy” stabbing the former DGP.

On January 4,Utsav also sent an email on the NID’s internal mailing system asking everyone to boycott the film No One Killed Jessica,as “an issue of extreme shame and sadness… is being exploited and publicised to make money”.

Utsav graduated from NID a year after his batchmates graduated as he was late in submitting his final project — an animation film on street urchins living near the temples of Varanasi. He had vacated the hostel in October 2008,and lived at a paying-guest accommodation.

In the wake of Tuesday’s attack, the NID issued a statement saying,“Mr Utsav Sharma has already completed his academic formalities last year. During his tenure as a student at NID,there was no display of violent behaviour and he was an average performer. At present, the institute has no contact with him (on) any matter whatsoever.”
