Uttar Pradesh tops nation,Delhi second in complaints to NCW

Delhi comes a close second nation-wide,in the number of complaints received by the NCW.

Uttar Pradesh tops the list of states from where maximum number of complaints have been received by the NCW since its inception,followed by Delhi.

Official figures also show that 2007 saw the highest number of complaints being received by the women’s panel in a year – 15,999. Last year,the National Commission for Women got 15,700 complaints while the number was 14,233 in 2009.

According to statistics,the commission,which was established in 1992,got 27,435 complaints from UP so far,followed by Delhi (7,452),Rajasthan (4,206),Haryana (2,683) and Madhya Pradesh (2,067).

Complaints are lodged under 33 heads in the Commission,including dowry death,harassment,police inaction,rape,acid attack and problems related to NRI marriages. Online registration of complaints was started in 2005 after which the number of cases has increased considerably.

This year till March,the panel has received 2,960 complaints.

Meanwhile,a newly-released study on status and performance of State Women’s Commissions showed that the panels in states of Rajasthan and Orissa registered maximum number of cases from 2006 to 2010.

The number of cases registered in Rajasthan during the period was 23,360,followed by Orissa (12,083),Tamil Nadu (5,712),Madhya Pradesh (4,841) and Gujarat (2,968).

The lowest number of complaints came from Mizoram (25) and Nagaland (50),says the study sponsored by NCW and conducted by Jawaharlal Nehru University associate professor Mondira Dutta. It compared data from 20 states as information was provided by some states partially while some others did not provide any.
