One year after he became the first BJP chief minister of Karnataka,a superstitious B S Yeddyurappa is yet to move into Anugraha, his officially designated home in Bangalore, while his government is now spending Rs 56.45 lakh for its renovation.
This is over and above the Rs 1.32 crore sum approved by the government (according to records placed in the state Legislature) for the renovation of the home Yeddyurappa actually lives in Race View Cottage his lucky residence, which is located a kilometre away from Anugraha.
According to sources,Yeddyurappa has been advised that the official chief ministerial residence has vaastu-related problems, and that these may have been behind the political fall of its most recent occupants, including S M Krishna,Dharam Singh and H D Kumaraswamy. Hence, the BJP leaders move to have this fixed.
Incidentally, both Krishna and Kumaraswamy had carried out their own Vaastu corrections to the Anugraha building before moving into the premises. Kumaraswamy ran up a bill of Rs 69 lakh for the same in 2006-07.
The general belief in political circles is that anyone who occupies Anugraha will not return to rule a second term in the state, resulting in the reluctance to occupy the premises.
According to details placed before the Karnataka Assembly, the state Government has called for tenders for Rs 56.45 lakh of work, that includes new brass hardware, extension of a portico, renovation of a kitchen and new bathroom fixtures.
Though Yeddyurappa regularly uses the Chief Minister’s home office ‘Krishna’,which is attached to Anugraha,he has so far used Anugraha only on a couple of occasions to hold meetings.
Race View Cottage,on the other hand,is considered lucky by Yeddyurappa since he ascended to the top political post in Karnataka while living in this house as an opposition leader and later as deputy chief minister to Kumaraswamy.
The renovation carried out in this residence so far includes new imported wallpapers, marble flooring and additional rooms.
According to sources in the government, while Yeddyurappa had offered Anugraha to Home Minister V S Acharya, the latter too had declined to move in.
In the past,Anugraha has been occupied by chief ministers Veerendra Patil,Veerappa Moily and H D Deve Gowda, who went on to become prime minister leaving the house to his elder son H D Revanna.
Since coming to power in Karnataka in June 2008,the BJP government has cleared projects worth Rs 4.17 crore for renovation of official residences of ministers. The previous JDS-BJP government had between February 2006 and October 2007 cleared Rs 7.13 crore for the same.
