Vacancies pile up,few teachers in SC/ST category

Over 3,000 posts of teachers reserved for SC/ST and OBC candidates are lying vacant in the state as the West Bengal School Service Commission has not been able to find qualified candidates.

Over 3,000 posts of teachers reserved for SC/ST and OBC candidates are lying vacant in the state as the West Bengal School Service Commission (WBSSC) has not been able to find qualified candidates.

In the results of the ninth WBSSC examinations declared on Wednesday, the commission has come out with a list of 19,171 candidates for 16,413 vacancies of teachers in the state. Normally the commission brings out a list of empanelled candidates and vacancies in the ratio 1.5: 1. But the commission has not received qualified candidates in the reserved category.

“We have a problem of finding ST candidates for mathematics and science subjects,” said WBSSC chairperson Ranajit Basu.

He said the vacancies are being piled up in SC/ST category for a few years and only the department of backward classes and welfare can take any step in this regard. Of the 19,171 empanelled candidates,7901 have a BEd degree and 11274 are without such degree.

The commission has also posted the results for the post of headmasters, for which it faced difficulty in finding suitable women candidates. For 869 vacancies, the commission has empanelled 1304 candidates,of whom 1069 are male and 235 female.

The commission also came out with the list of teachers appointed for Work Education that was stopped for few years because of legal hurdles. Against 1601 vacancies the commission has appointed only about 700 teachers as it could not find suitable candidates. “Most of the posts of teachers in the Work Education category are reserved for ST candidates. Therefore we could not find suitable candidates,” said the SSC chairman.

The interview of empanelled candidates for headmaster and assistant teachers will begin by June and the teachers are expected to join by August.
