Vadodara girl tops CBSE exam in humanities

In the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) results that were announced on Monday, Aastha Sethi, a student of DPS school in Vadodara, has emerged as the national topper in the humanities stream, scoring 490 marks out of 500 and 100% in psychology.

"My friends were surprised when I told them I would study humanities, because they believed I could easily become an engineer or a doctor," an elated Aastha told The Indian Express on Tuesday.

Aastha's father Sudhir Sethi said his daughter's achievement was not only a matter of pride for his family but also for the state since a student from Gujarat had topped in the country.

Aastha intends to apply for the BA (honours) course in psychology at Lady Shri Ram College in Delhi, after which she plans to write the Civil Services Examination. "I want to become a civil servant to serve my country. I would also consider getting into politics, because that is also a way to serve the country." she said.

Among the politicians, Aastha admires Chief Minister Narendra Modi, who she says is "charismatic and a man of action".

Aastha also likes the field of media. When asked to share the secret behind her success, she said it was her love for her subjects that did the trick. She counts English, psychology and history among her favourite subjects. She has scored 96% in English and 99% in history. "I did regular studies, I even took a whole day's break from studies. Because I loved the subjects, I never felt any kind of pressure," she said.
