The ongoing advertising campaign Phir dil do hockey ko to popularise the National Game ahead of the World Cup seems to have done its bit. Recently,a number of sponsors and donors, some anonymous, have approached the Baroda District Hockey Association to revive the game.
BDHA president Nilesh Patel said it was unexpected to see sponsors coming forward at their own. He,however, said that money alone cannot improve the state of the game, and there is a need for finding more talent, which will bring back the glory. We needed help to groom the budding talents. We have received all possible helps from the donors. We have reached the stage where we can pay more attention to improve the game rather than worrying about the depleting bank balance, added Patel.
Among others, the association has received a donation of Rs 12 lakh for a fresh lawn and lights at the ground. The donor, who sought to remain anonymous, said: When I read about the condition of hockey in Vadodara,I was saddened.
I knew some association members and discussed with them the plans they had to develop the game. I had no problem in lending financial aid.
Also,Baroda Cricket Associations coach Ajit Bhoite has donated Rs 50,000 for fencing of the ground. Earlier this month,Samarjit Gaekwad sponsored the under-14 district-level tournament and promised to continue with the financial assistance.
Shashi Borde,a former state hockey player, said,After a long time we saw a trophy, which actually looked like a real one. Earlier, small cups were given.
