Keeping in view the dwindling number of trees in the city,a proposal has been mooted for construction of a new garden. The garden will house those species whose numbers are either decreasing in the city or are already extinct. The garden, called Valley of Spring,is proposed to come up in Sector 53 over an area of 30 acres and is likely to cost Rs 5 crore. It will house 36 varieties of trees,29 kinds of shrubs and 21 species of flowering climbers.
Over the last few years, the need to widen roads ensured that trees were cut at an unprecedented rate. Roots have been exposed and concrete has suffocated the trees.
The practice of burning leaves near the tree trunks has also caused extensive damage. With the practice more prevalent during these summer, many trees with blackened trunks can be found in different sectors of the city. Executive Engineer,Horticulture,UT Administration,Harjit Singh, said,When the city was created, there were many species of trees. Gradually, the number has come down. We want that future generations are aware of the variety of trees available in the city. The garden will give them a glimpse of the citys legacy. The proposal includes a portrait gallery, where pictures of flowers and trees will be displayed. The area is situated near a Choe,so a bridge will be built over it. A large number of theme gardens have already been approved for the city, especially the southern sectors. These include Valley of Animals,Sunken Garden,Garden of Silence,Garden of Palms and Garden of Conifers among others. Designs for the same have been prepared.
