: Hint of an early decision on J&K polls had Prime Minister Manmohan Singh rushing to inaugurate the Valley’s first railway line on Saturday. However, such has been the effect of the agitation over the Amarnath land issue that the PM’s team dropped the idea of holding a small public rally for him to mark the occasion, for reportedly fear of poor attendance. “The embarrassment of a handful in attendance to a PM address on such an important day would have been more damaging,” said a Congress leader. The same may hold true if elections are held on time, but the Government feels that would still be more acceptable than continuing with Governor’s Rule. In fact, N N Vohra has himself backed on-schedule polls.
