Varsha suicide: Asha Bhosle’s statement yet to be recorded

Police officers probing the suicide of Varsha Bhosle on Tuesday said the statement of her mother, veteran singer Asha Bhosle, would be crucial to throw light on Varsha's recent state of mind and factors that might have led to her death.

"Asha Bhosle returned to Mumbai late on Monday. However, we have been unable to record her statement yet as she is not in a condition to give one," said a police officer. The police have recorded the statements of Varsha's domestic help Dipali Mane and her driver Vijay Nakashe.

The Gamdevi police, meanwhile, have zeroed in on four persons who could have possibly owned the pistol with which Varsha shot herself, officers said. Once identified, the owner of the pistol could be booked for negligence as well as under sections of the Arms Act, said the police. Varsha's brother Anand is known to have another firearm registered under his name.

"We will find out if Anand also owned the .6mm Belgium made pistol with which Varsha shot herself," said an officer.

On Tuesday, the police received Varsha's post-mortem report. Krishna Prakash, additional commissioner of police (south region) said, "The report states that Varsha died due to severe haemorrhage caused by the bullet injury. Varsha's viscera have been preserved for forensic analysis to find out the exact time of death," he added.

Police officers said they would also contact the two Pune doctors who had been treating her. "Varsha had attempted suicide twice earlier. We are now contacting the hospitals where she was admitted to find out whether they had informed the police about the suicide attempts. We are also going through old cases to get the details," said the officer.
