The examination department of the University of Pune (UoP) is again under the scanner. The results of the second year engineering course are still not out even as the deadline as per the university rule ended two weeks back. As the answer papers of some subjects are still to be checked, the results could not be out even in this week too.
According to a teacher involved in the centralised assessment process (CAP) of the second year engineering course, the CAP is still going on and most of the answer papers of mathematics are still to be checked. As there is a crunch of approved teachers for paper checking, the delay was inevitable, he said.
The exams of second year engineering course were over on June 2. As per the rules, the results should have been out within 45 days. But the paper checking is still going on even after the deadline is over. The irony of the situation is that the exams of the third year engineering course were over on June 3 and the results of third year are ready.
The teacher on condition of anonymity said that till Friday evening as many as 17,000 papers of all the five subjects of second year engineering course were to be checked. Compared to last term, this time the university had sent letters to only half of the teachers inviting them to check the papers, which has also hampered the paper checking process. Now,the paper checking process has been geared up but it is difficult to complete the work within a week, he said.
A student of second year engineering course from a reputed college said they were told that the results would be out by July 15. When we asked about the results once the deadline got over, our teachers said the papers are still to be checked, he said.
The acting controller of examination S M Ahire however said that the CAP was over and the results would be out soon. There was some delay in paper checking. But we have worked hard to complete the task. The results of first year are already out and the second and third year results will be out very soon, he said.
The delay in results is however have become a routine thing for the students. It is shameful that every year the examination system fails and the varsity is doing nothing to revamp it. Now if the teachers have to check a few thousand papers in a week, how can the quality be maintained, said Narendra Sidhaye,a teacher who is fighting for the rights of engineering students.
* The total number of students, who appear for exams 8 lakh
* The total number of papers the varsity checks around 1 cr
* Total number of engineering students around 1 lakh
* Number of answer papers to be checked every term around 10 lakh
