Accompanied by supporters waving saffron flags and chanting “Jai Shri Ram,” a saffron-clad Varun Gandhi surrendered in a Pilibhit court on Saturday.

Though the district administration had clamped prohibitory orders, hundreds of supporters gathered for a saffron show of strength which set the tone for the BJP’s election campaign, at least in the state.

Gandhi said: “I am not afraid of going to jail. If it generates confidence in some people, I will go to jail.” Gandhi, who faces charges for making inflammatory speeches, was sent to judicial custody. The court has fixed Monday for hearing his bail application. The administration has lodged three FIRs against him.

His supporters, who poured in from across the district, clashed with the police after his arrest. Police fired rubber bullets, lobbed teargas shells and caned the stone-throwing mob that gathered at the gate of the court when he was being taken to the district jail. Five policemen and 20 activists were injured.

Varun’s mother and sitting MP from Pilibhit, Maneka Gandhi, landed later in the day and singled out a Muslim inspector for beating up the BJP activists. “Around 45 people are in the hospital. As many as 25 of them were beaten up by a single police inspector. His name is Pervez Mian,” she said. She later visited her son in the jail and the injured in the hospital.

The trouble began in the morning after Gandhi’s supporters started reaching Pilibhit town. “This is a spontaneous gathering of Varun’s supporters. We have not intimated anything to the district administration in this regard,” BJP’s district president Yogendra Gangwar said. The absence of BJP flags in the show clearly indicated careful planning to escape possible action from the Election Commission. Senior BJP leader Kalraj Mishra was present at the spot to “monitor the surrender of Varun Gandhi.”

Mayawati - SUPARIBy: Common Man | 02-Apr-2009 Reply | Forward I see a possibility of Mayawati having taken a political Supari from Chhota Sakeel to fish off Varun. She can do anything and everything for Money and Power....
varun Gandhi and BJPBy: Anant | 31-Mar-2009 Reply | Forward I suppose one has to be thankful that people like varun,Modi,Advani,Rajnath Singh, and other unsavory persons like the ones who beat up girls and Thakerays etc they all are in the same party, the BJP. I am sure there is room for Tytler and the other haters of Sikhs to join BJP. It would be wonderful if all such politicians join BJP and it will be easy for the nation to keep track of their activities.
varun's dramaBy: ak dubey | 30-Mar-2009 Reply | Forward No political party is sane and BJP's leaders aree the impotant lot. Let Varun Ganddhi or for that reason even Atal bihari Bajpai go to the villages and help even a few villagers get out of their problems. Are they only for a ticket in election so that they can be a part of power. the same thing is applicable to Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi. These duffers should first work as a farmer or labourer and then enjoy the fruits of power. What have they done for the country? Only making fools of the Indian people. I find all politicians to be the snakes. they do not know what is the need of people and what should they do. the politiians shouldd first be Yogis, then only they can be expected of doing anything for others. I hate the democratic system that allows murderers to become the leaders.
Go Varun GoBy: Jay S | 30-Mar-2009 Reply | Forward Many thanks to Varun. His "wake up and stand tall " call to the Hindu community is without parallel. In the name of secularism hindus suffer ignominy in their own motherland. All forms of major media outlets have been utterly callous with their sustained efforts to denigrate hindus and hinduism. It is time for the poor to wake up and see how the CORRUPT political leaders in India are exploiting them in the name of "CASTE" and other Colonial Era (British, Portugese) style "Divide and Conquer" brain washing tactics. Power to Varun for his efforts to help the poor and downtrodden in India.
BJP’s Gandhi surrenders amid violenceBy: Abdul Hameed | 29-Mar-2009 Reply | Forward The double standards of the selfish politician comes out in open. The mother says nobody should harm even a stray dog and the son says hands and legs will be cut. Over top of that a minority policeman is blamed for the shooting incident. Political ostriches, shame, really shame
BJP’s Gandhi surrenders amid violenceBy: N.V.SANKARAN | 30-Mar-2009 Reply | Forward From what I had heard and seen on the CD, Varun Gandhi did not say that he would cut the hands of the Muslims, but of those who raise their hands against the Hindus. So why do you jump to the conclusion that he was targeting the Muslims? Are you suggesting that the Muslims are raising their hands against the Hindus? By the way, one CPM minister of Kerala recently declared in public that if anybody dared to raise his hands or wrote something against the CPM general secretary of Kerala, his hands would be cut off. What do you have to say about it?
CPM Minister is secularBy: Common Man | 02-Apr-2009 Reply | Forward There is a difference dear. CPM Minister you are talking about is secular.
