Vasava elected Speaker unopposed

Ganpatsinh Vestabhai Vasava,second-time MLA from Mangrol constituency in Surat district,was elected as the new state Assembly Speaker unanimously in a voting on Thursday.

Ganpatsinh Vestabhai Vasava,second-time MLA from Mangrol constituency in Surat district,was elected as the new state Assembly Speaker unanimously in a voting on Thursday.

Chief Minister Narendra Modi had proposed Vasava’s name which was seconded by Shaktisinh Gohil,leader of the Opposition,and other members of the House.

After Vasava’s election,Modi said the state was fortunate that for the first time,a son of the tribal community will grace the Speaker’s post and will be the youngest ever to occupy the chair. Hailing Vasava’s “exemplary” contributions to the tribal communities,Modi hoped his enthusiasm and sporting spirit will help the House.

Gohil said the Congress was endorsing the choice for the new Speaker in keeping with parliamentary traditions. First tribal CM was from the Congress and present deputy leader of the Opposition and Public Account Committee chairperson are also tribals,he said,adding it showed his party’s commitment towards development of the community.

Vasava expressed his thanks for his unanimous election and promised to remain detached from party politics to do justice to his position.

Vasava has cleared his MA part one and owns a petrol pump,besides being engaged in agriculture. He is also active in the mining and diamond business.

A resident of Vadi village of Umarpada taluka,Vasava first came to limelight when in August last year when he compared Modi to Lord Krishna at a function at Kim. He had also compared Congress leaders to the mythological Kams of Krishna lore.
