Vasundhara to step down after Assembly session

Vasundhara Raje has agreed to step down after a three-day session of the Assembly, which begins in Jaipur on August 27.

In what could bring some cheer to the BJP,otherwise marred by internecine feud,a smooth transition in Rajasthan appears to be in the offing with BJP Legislature Party leader Vasundhara Raje agreeing to step down after a three-day session of the Assembly, which begins in Jaipur on August 27.

“The two sides (Raje and central BJP) have satisfactorily reached a compromise formula even if they have given themselves some more time for the same,” said BJP national treasurer Ramdas Aggarwal, who along with former Rajasthan BJP chief Om Mathur, worked to break the ice between Raje and party president Rajnath Singh.

Raje, who commands an overwhelming majority among party MLAs,had met L K Advani and Rajnath Singh here on Saturday, and argued that she should have a say in deciding her successor. She also demanded action against the leaders who had worked against the party’s interests in the Assembly polls.

With her demands getting the party’s nod,she agreed to pave the way for another leader to head the BJP Legislature Party. Her request to continue till the three-day session was seen as a “middle path for the two sides”.

“The three-day session has been convened to discuss two important Bills — one on elections to local bodies, and another on Essential Marriage Act,” said suspended BJP MLA Rajendra Rathore. His suspension,as also that of another suspended party MLA,is likely to be revoked later this month. Raje will likely be made a party general secretary when she moves to Delhi.
