The Vigilance Bureau (VB) in Mansa on Thursday detected a fraud of over Rs 1.35 crore in building and roadways and public works department. While seven people have been arrested in the case, one surrendered before the court.
Those arrested have been identified as retired treasurer Piyare Lal, B&R superintendent Satpal Bansal, executive engineer Joginder Singh and four contractors — Paras, Anil Kumar, Jaswinder Singh and Basant Singh. SDO Sarabjit Singh had surrendered before the court.
"The employees had made fake letter of cashment, with which contractors were paid when they had in reality, done no work. The contractors used to give commission to the employees to get their fake bills passed," said SSP (Vigilance) S S Chahal. So far, the VB has been able to trace fake bills worth Rs 1.35 crore, he added.
Chahal further said that officers from Chandigarh VB were also looking into the case.
