Following various cases of health emergencies in schools and colleges in the city, Delhi University’s Sri Venkateswara College has planned to keep track of the students’ medical history.
Students taking admissions in Venkateswara will have to fill up an additional column giving their physician’s number and any chronic ailment they might be suffering from. Ailments like low blood pressure, asthma or bronchitis need to be reported so that necessary drugs can be stocked to tackle emergencies.
“We have asked students for three things — any health problem, the phone numbers of their doctors and their parents,” said Nirmal Kumar, admission convener of the college.
Kumar added that their medical room is under construction and will be ready before the session starts.
“The medical room will be equipped in concurrence with information provided by the students. We are trying to keep immediate life-saving drugs that legally are permitted. We will focus on students with asthma problems,” Kumar said.
Kamla Rao, visiting doctor at Venkateswara, said that as per health standards they certain drugs as they are legally allowed to be stocked only by authorised chemists and administered as per the doctor’s prescription.
“We are basically looking at preliminary attention required to tackle health emergencies so that the student can be rushed to the hospital,” said Rao.
“Although we advise students to carry their prescribed medication, in case a student wants us to keep an inhaler for them we will do that too,” said Kumar.
