Versova siblings’ death: Body of Rameez exhumed

Versova police said doctors have examined the body and it should be easy to carry out clinical analysis as it has not decomposed

The body of Rameez Chougle, the younger of the Versova siblings who died mysteriously in July, was exhumed on Monday morning. Police officers said the body had not decomposed.

The police had sought permissions for exhuming the body after a panel of four doctors said a fresh post mortem was needed to ascertain the cause of the siblings' death. The Versova police obtained permission of the suburban collector to exhume Rameez's body on August 27. The police then sought the local tehsildar and health department's approval, following which the body was exhumed at 9 am on Monday from the Yari Road burial ground. A team from the Rapid Action Force, three police van filled personnel and locals including prominent residents gathered at the cemetery preventing entry of strangers.

An ambulance was allowed inside to transport the body to the hospital. Rameez's father Gayasuddin Chougle was also called at the police station to sign papers for the post mortem and taking the body into their custody. Four hours after the body was exhumed, it was transported to JJ hospital.

Versova police said doctors have examined the body and it should be easy to carry out clinical analysis as it was not decomposed. "We will request the authorities to conduct the procedure as early as possible and submit the report within 15 days," said a police officer.

The police said the elder of the two siblings, Rehab's final post mortem report had arrived recently, revealing that she had died of phosphide poisoning. Traces of the lethal chemical, aluminium phosphide, were found in her stomach as well as lungs. "There was a question mark about Rameez's death as no post mortem was conducted. Things will become clearer on that front soon," said the official.
