A sting operation by relatives of a Haryana man,in which a Sub-Inspector was caught on tape bragging about framing the man in a case under the Narcotic Drugs Psychotropic Substances Act,has led to registration of a criminal case against the Sub-Inspector.
SI Wahid Ahmad has been booked under sections 193 (false evidence),132 (wrongful confinement) and 120B (conspiracy) at the Koshi police station in Mathura district. His victim,Akhtar, got bail on Monday after spending two months in jail.
A resident of Indane village in Mewat district of Haryana,Akhtar was arrested on December 29,2010. The SI,who was in charge of Kosikala police outpost, claimed he had caught Akhtar carrying 1.75 grams of a white narcotic substance.
Now it turns out that the SI had arrested Akhtar at the behest of his friend Azad Mohammad,a former pradhan of Indane, who wanted to teach Akhtar a lesson for opposing him in the panchayat elections in June 2010. Azad Mohammad had lost to rival Haji Chandar Khan, whom Akhtar had supported. Azad Mohammad has been made a co-accused in the case registered against the SI on the basis of an inquiry conducted after Akhtars family submitted the tape, containing the SIs three-minute soundbyte, made in their sting operation.
Statements of over 30 persons were recorded during the inquiry which found that the SI did not arrest Akhtar from the place mentioned in the records, but from another place outside the district. The inquiry also found other discrepancies.
