Vidarbha contractors protest delay in payment

Days after BJP president Nitin Gadkari was caught in a row over a letter written to then Union Water Resources Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal, seeking early release of pending payments of contractors executing Vidarbha irrigation projects, the contractors protested outside Vidarbha Irrigation Development Corporation (VIDC) here on Monday, demanding payment of pending bills before November 4.

The contractors, mostly from Gosikhurd project, marched to the VIDC office and staged a dharna, blocking the way of Executive Director P C Zapke and giving him a memorandum.

"We want our money before Diwali. We are not even getting overdrafts from banks. We have to pay others too and the interest is growing by the day. A time will come when our machineries will be confiscated," Shirish Chakradeo, who led the protest, said.
