Vigil tightened in south as Prabhkaran’s body is recovered

Tamil Nadu remained under heightened security after Sri Lankan Army recovered the body of LTTE chief V Prabhakaran on Tuesday as neighbouring Kerala and Karnataka stepped up vigil to check infiltration of LTTE cadres.

Armed personnel from paramilitary and state police have been posted at the office and the residence of the Sri Lankan Deputy High Commissioner,the Mahabodhi Society and the offices of Sri Lankan Airlines and Bank of Ceylon here,police said. Both the High Commission and Bank of Ceylon had come

under attack from pro-Eelam activists in recent past.

Gun-trotting policemen are guarding important places,including shopping malls here while security was also stepped up in Sri Lankan Tamils refugee camps across the state.

As Sri Lankan Army released visuals of Prabhakaran’s body,pro-Eelam leaders including Dravidar Kazhagam president K Veeramani and VCK chief Thol Thirumavalavan held a demonstration seeking UN intervention for distribution of aid to affected Tamils in relief camps in Sri Lanka.

In Salem,six vehicles,including two buses,were stoned and 25 persons were detained for the violence,police said.

Sri Lankan repatriates in Gudalur and Kothagiri towns of Nilgiris district observed a bandh and burnt effigies of Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa and Congress chief Sonia Gandhi,protesting the killing of Prabhakaran.

In Karnataka,forest department was put on alert after the intelligence reports of some LTTE cadres trying to enter Kerala through sea route and then to the state. Kerala too maintained strict vigil along its coast.
