From selling soda bottles on the streets of Thrissur to one of the most recognisable faces of Indian football, it’s been an incredible journey for IM Vijayan. And the striker, who retired from all forms of football three seasons ago to get into acting is looking to add another chapter to his story — this time with the New Delhi Heroes.
Talking to The Indian Express, Vijayan revealed that he was in talks with the I-League Second Division club and was expecting to get a green signal from them. “I called up Chima (Okerie) in the morning and am looking forward to play for New Delhi Heroes,” said Vijayan, who retired after finishing the 2005 season at Mohun Bagan.
“I wanted to play for a Dehi club and then retire but at that time I wasn’t offered any contract by anyone.I hope this year I will get a contract with them as I want to retire after playing in Delhi, where I haven’t played for a long time,” Vijayan said.
When contacted New Delhi Heroes coach and Vijayan’s former team mate, Okerie, confirmed that Vijayan had shown interest to play for his team. “Yes, I had a word with Vijayan and I have also forwarded his case to the club management for their approval. It is now up to them to decide whether they want him or not,” Okerie said.
But Okerie confirmed that 39-year-old would get no favours on account of being an old friend and team mate.
