After withdrawals and submission of affidavits, Delhi University on Thursday released the list of candidates for its Students' Union election, scheduled for September 14.
The university notice, however, said "the list was provisional, subject to verification of statements of affidavit".
According to Chief Election Commissioner C S Dubey, if any information regarding violation of the Lyngdoh Committee, code of conduct and the Defacement Act is provided to the Election Commission regarding a candidate, action will be taken.
"The university officials had a meeting with senior police officers and we are taking every measure to ensure that no untoward incident takes place. Two new measures were introduced this year. First, only four students will accompany the candidate to classrooms. Second, canvassing will take place only between 8 am and 8 pm," he said.
The university officials will also be monitoring activities on campus through CCTV cameras that have been installed at various places. This time, in an attempt to familiarise students with the candidates, DU is also planning to put each candidate's profile on its website.
Following numerous withdrawals and three cancellations, the number of candidates was reduced to less than half of the first list. For instance, the president's post has only 13 students on the final list as opposed to 35 in the provisional one. Similarly, of the 30 candidates for the vice-president post on the earlier list, there are only seven left. Nine students will be contest for the post of joint-secretary and secretary.
Arun Hooda, a student of Faculty of Law, is the presidential candidate of ABVP for the DUSU polls. "After getting a BTech degree from MD University, I joined the Indian Air Force. After leaving the Forces, I took admission here," he said.
A student of Buddhist Studies, and an NSUI member, Ankit Dhananjay Choudhary, is also competing for the president's post. While Ajay Chikkara from NSUI held the president's post last year, ABVP activists had won the other three seats.
