Village merger plan likely to get delayed

The process of merging 15 more villages in the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) jurisdiction is likely get delayed as the legal committee has urged the civic administration to again table a detailed merger proposal. The committee had called a special meeting on Saturday to reconsider the decision after the ruling NCP managed to approve the proposal in the absence of members of other political parties on Thursday.

However,this evoked opposition from all other political parties and they immediately sought reconsideration of the decision.

“The resolution to reconsider the decision was approved in the committee meeting and the earlier decision has been cancelled,” said chairman Datta Bahirat of Congress. The resolution was supported by Congress,BJP and MNS while the members of NCP remained absent from the meeting.

He said a decision was taken to urge the municipal commissioner to again table the proposal with detailed information about the villages to be merged in PMC. The details should include the additional water supply that would be required to meet the demands of the residents of the villages,availability of open space for civic amenities and nod from the gram panchayats of the villages.

Meanwhile,the NCP in a press statement said that the meeting called on Saturday was illegal and the proceedings of the meeting do not hold any importance.
