Gandhinagar, September 25: : The Sabarmati Express coach burning was a ‘pre-planned conspiracy’, a probe panel has said also giving a clean chit to Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi and the state police in the subsequent post-Godhra riots that claimed over 1,000 lives.

The report which went into the coach burning in February, 2002 in which 58 kar sevaks returning from Ayodhya, were killed, ‘was a pre-planned conspiracy’ which was hatched at the Aman Guest House in Godhra.

The train carnage was cited as the reason by Hindu outfits to justify the post-Godhra pogrom.

This finding of the two-member Commission goes contrary to a probe headed by another former Supreme Court judge U C Banerjee set up by the Lalu Prasad-headed railway ministry that the coach burning was purely an accident. Retired justice Akshay Mehta was the other member of the Nanavati Commission.

"There is absolutely no evidence to show that either the Chief Minister or any of the ministers in his council or police officers had played any role in the Godhra incident," said the report of Justice G T Nanavati, a former Supreme Court judge that went into the train burning incident.

The first part of the report was tabled in the state Assembly on Thursday and evoked instant criticism from political parties and activists opposed to the BJP. They contended that the Commission was set up to ‘mislead’ the people.

The conclusion that the train burning was a ‘pre-planned conspiracy’ was based on various grounds including the statements of the passengers of the train that stone pelting continued for 10-20 minutes to prevent the passengers from coming out of the coach.

140 litres of petrol was purchased by Razzak Kurkur and Salim Panwala to execute the conspiracy, the Commission said adding that according to eyewitnesses, Shaukat Lalu and Mohammad Latika, had possibly opened the sliding door connecting the S6 and S7 coaches and entered S6 through that door.

One Hassan Lalu had thrown a burning rag which had led to the fire in the S6 coach, it said.

On the conspiracy, the report said it was hatched at the Aman Guest House on the directions of Maulvi Umarji and executed by Razzak Kurkur, Salim Panwala, Shaukat Lalu, Imran Sheri, Rafique Batuk and Shiraj Bala.

"The conspiracy hatched by these persons further appears to be a part of a larger conspiracy to create Terror and destabilise the administration," the report said.

Live life king size by Rajesh Chawla on 2008-09-26 09:01:56.422398+05:30
I don't care who was involved and who was not involved. The thing I thrive on is Piece. India is one of the greatest countries in the world, but such incidents put India to shame. Thousands of people lost lives for what? Religion or just madness? Hindu, Muslim, Sikh or Christians - we all are normal people. We just want to live normal life. Wish to return to our families after work and spend quality time with them. We don't want to live in the fear of safety of our family and ourself. Hey Indian please wake up and live life king size. Life is too short - lets live piecefully.I am sure the report is out but who know's what the truth is. Lets pray for well being of everyone and lets live like a big family irrespective of religion, cast ..... and make India the best country in the world.
NANAVATI REPORT by aks on 2008-09-26 08:44:33.299539+05:30
It seems interesting to note that the report submitted by justice Nanavati is criticised by the govt. people whom the people of India has elected for protection of their rights. This is same honourable judge who has given the report on 1984 riots and we are sure the integerity of this person should not be questioned. This govt. of congress and its allies has always tried to appease the minorties at the expense of rights of majority. And above all who is Lalu Yadav to give adverse comments on the report. People may not forgive him for making such comments keeping in view his own mess-up of Bihar which has become the most backward state despite having plenty of natural resorces. How comes the railway enquiry becomes more important than the Nanavati commission that too was released at the time of general elections. These leaders are making baseless statements and they have no sympathy for the persons who have lost their lives either in Gujarat or elsewhere.
If Afzal Guru form commission he will prove himself innocent ! by alex on 2008-09-26 08:23:30.01418+05:30
If Afzal Guru form his commission, he will also prove himself innocent, but justice remain injustice !
Nanavati Report by Niranjan on 2008-09-26 08:07:42.084362+05:30
A system takes 7 years to come up with a report which naturally exonerates the person who appointed the commission. So, is there anything new in the report that we have not already heard of. Our commissions will put a snail to shame!!!
Lalu paid benerjee? by A. Rajput on 2008-09-26 07:32:08.668479+05:30
Nanavati Commission was appointed by the Supreme Court, not Mr. Modi. Do not forget that this guy benrgee was paid and appointed by lalu (openly SIMI supporter, ghas charo , job for land scams). Benerje finished his investigation in one day in Gujarat and interupted Nanavati Commission investigation appointed by the Supreme Court., Benerjee did not meet with relatives or survivors of torched hindu pilgrims of the train. Met Teesta, and other pseudo secularists form outside of the State. Bene, whose reputation is tainted in his own State W. bengal (home on grabbed land). What do you expect from p-sec appointees who are involved with borfos, oil, ghas charo ,cash for trust vote, amaranth, ram setu scams. Bene omitted the fact that one of the attackers was an ex congressman of the Godhra Municipality. Did you notice and remember most of these p-sec bengalis arundhiti, nadita, amartya, ajay ghosh and so many) cannot speak a word against their w.bengal comrades and bad mouth BJP
Selective amnesia by Hindu on 2008-09-26 07:07:58.447455+05:30
The bias of the anti-Hindu electronic English media is evident in the hyper excited reporting of the church attack. The likes of Girish Karnad, U R Ananthamurthy and Mahesh Bhatt Teesta Shabana Azmi Barka Dutt Sardesai know which side of their bread is buttered. Their selective amnesia is amusing. Did these raise any voice in support of amaranth pilgrims protest They never react on lakhs of Hindus being displaced from Kashmir. These opportunists are no better than traitors of the past who are ready to sell the dignity of the country for their selfish gains.Do you know AP CM Rajashekar Reddy is a Christian(of course converted) and is aggressively converting poor people in AP including Tirupathi and no wonder Congress and Missionaries are upset in kannadiga’s resistance.
Godhra Commission reports by Gangadhar G. Barve on 2008-09-26 06:11:08.836869+05:30
The conflicting conclusions of the two ex-Supreme Court judges about the Godhra train burning may baffle the common man. But the reason is simple. Anyone who has worked as a judge at any level barring some dishonourable exceptions, is impartial only during the period he works as a judge. Right from the birth till becoming a judge, he behaves like other human beings by being impartial sometimes and partial at some other times. Same applies to the post-judgeship period. It is necessary, if at all necessary after such a long period, to subject the Godhra and Post-Godhra happenings to a Commission of sitting judges chosen by the judiciary itself.
58 women and children died by Namba Madayangala on 2008-09-26 05:30:22.231129+05:30
This report is disingenuous. It cunningly doesn't mention that several women and children were among the 58 people burnt alive in the Godhra train by Muslims.Instead, it cunningly uses the term "Kar Sevaks".As though it is all right if Kar Sevaks are murdered.Media in India is all biased against Hindus.
Nanavati Commission report! by Nyayman on 2008-09-26 05:15:50.10141+05:30
It may e recalled in the Tehelka expose of Gujarat Pogromof 2002,Babu Bajrangi was shown praising Modi for changing the judge to help him secure bail! The very same person was Made by Mod tojoin the Nanavati commission subsequently!Hence, strong doubts of a "compromised commission"arose. After six years the Commission has submitted its report to Modi instead of the Chief Secretary, alleges Lallu Prasad Yadav. It may be recalled that "the evidence given to the Commission nor its final Report is relevant in a criminal trial!Further, the question rises as to How could Modi place before the House a part of the Report, when Full Report has been submitted to him?
no more Godhras by murali panekkatt on 2008-09-26 03:42:27.950193+05:30
The people of this country need to remain vigilant against the ongoing subversive activities of those who foster Islamic terrorism from being dragged into mad reprisals that can plunge the country to the inferno of violence and anarchy by provocative strikes on soft targets like market places, religious shrines etc. We do not want any repetition of Godhra.
Nanavaty Report by Nirupama Kumar on 2008-09-26 01:59:27.539714+05:30
Whatever the report says, the fact is that a lot of people died in the Gujarat riots. The true figure and the communities that those people belonged to is irrelevant. This should never have happened in any civilised society. All communities are at fault. The police should have ensured the protection of life and property. Whether they did not do so wilfully or whether it was because they were poorly trained is again irrelevant. This country will never develop until we learn to behave in civil manner, no matter what the dispute or the provocation. Until our people are more educated and less stricken by poverty we will continue to see such incidents.
Modi is no saint by Suvi Cyriac Nadakluzhackal on 2008-09-26 01:05:41.713786+05:30
Every one saw the truth when Tehelka exposed the admission videos of Modi's Gunda's for their cruel activities during the riots with Modi's help. Now Nanavati commission's report is like a "clean chit given to Bin Laden on September 11 attacks by Al Qaeda". I am not saying that all the activities of Muslim terrorists are any better either.
Cheated Again by Naveed on 2008-09-26 00:58:39.391676+05:30
Who were the people on TEHELKA tapes disclosing openly?? Were all these leaders not from Gujrath riots. Once again Muslims are cheated only to make problems from bad to worse. Who killed all the people there, where was the police then?? What these clean chit police
Modi is innocent by Asagar Ali on 2008-09-26 00:07:09.580517+05:30
Finally, the God has been kind to Mr. Modi. He is declared innocent, as he has been in reality. It is hoped that pro-pakistani persons like Setalvad , Shabana Azmi, Sonia Gandhi, Lalu Luccha, Malawi Mulayam will keep their lapred mouths shut forever now.

UPA Government should resign now by Mrs Charulata on 2008-09-25 23:14:05.265367+05:30
UPA government came to power on Gujarat riots issue blaming Modi and Hindus.Godhra carnage was an act of Muslim supporters of congress and secular forces. Long live Modi ji saviour of Hindus. If there is any shame left then secular brigade should resign. But we know that secular forcesare shameless and will stick to power by whatever means they can.
More work for Modi now by Aryan on 2008-09-25 22:48:22.812112+05:30
I think we have resolved one big issue now Modi needs to resolve the terrorism issue for all of us. It is becoming very important. This is more a strong arguement how low Congress party can go and how much they have become anti Indians. Thanks Modi people of his kind are more needed now. As he rightly says we need to now be more careful about security as Congress is not providing any for all of us. Look they don't even want POTA after so many people have died.

TRUTH TRIUMPHS, AT LAST!
Godhra Nanavati by D.A.ESWAR on 2008-09-25 22:18:18.579694+05:30
I can understand Congress, SP or Setalvad who donot bother about Hindus who lose their lives in violence.I dont know why English Media didnot say a single word for 60 Hindus who were burnt in Godhra Rail coach although thye generate sympathy for 1000 Muslims died in post Godhra riots. Now all should stop ointing finger at Mr. Modi or Gujarat Govt. as nanvati Commission exonerated them. However Govt should take all steps to protect Hindus or Muslims who lose lives in such incidents.
