Violence in Mumbai
Commenting on the eruption of violence at a demonstration by some Muslim organisations at Mumbais Azad Maidan, protesting against the communal violence in Assam and Myanmar, the daily Inquilab, published from several places including Delhi and Mumbai, writes in an editorial on August 12: Since the media had not paid adequate attention… to the horrible violence in Assam and Burma, the details of incidents in these places did not come up at the peoples level, the photographs and details that reached the people through social media were enough to agonise the common man. That is why investigative agencies should have had a sense of the restlessness among the people. They should have also realised that even a minor spark could turn into a full blaze. The paper adds: Whatever happened was extremely regrettable. In such a situation, people should remain peaceful and cooperate with the administration.
Rashtriya Sahara,in its August 13 editorial, emphatically says,Undoubtedly, the so-called national media did not give to the incidents of Myanmar and Assam the importance accorded to even minor cases of violence in the country. But the response to it can certainly not be an attack on the media.
The daily Sahafat, published from Delhi,Mumbai,Lucknow and Dehradun, says that a protest by Muslims turned violent by the handiwork of some miscreants. In its report, the paper quotes some eyewitnesses saying that the miscreants were disguised (naqaab posh) or hiding their faces with handkerchiefs and pelting stones at the people as well as at media representatives and policemen.
Baba Ramdevs Call
Following the dramatic end of Baba Ramdevs demonstration against black money and corruption in the capital,Delhi-based daily,Hamara Samaj,in an editorial on August 15 writes: One thing is common between the campaigns of Baba Ramdev and Anna Hazare: opposition to Congress and support for BJP… Anna Hazare,in the name of Jan Lokpal issue and Baba Ramdev taking up the issues of corruption and black money are opposing the UPA government, particularly the Congress party… When the Congress is seriously working on both these issues, what is the meaning of opposition to Congress and support for BJP? It seems that RSS and BJP have got these two campaigns launched after great thinking and planning.
Inquilab,in an editorial on August 16,writes that the BJP walking to Ramdev, not alone but along with its allies, makes it clear it wants political benefit to accrue to the ascent of this political alliance and not it alone.
Keshubhais Rebellion
Rashtriya Sahara,in an August 6 editorial, writes: This is not the first time the senior BJP leader of Gujarat,Keshubhai Patel, has rebelled against Narendra Modi. But this time his rebellion is not restricted to Modi alone. He has made a serious criticism of the BJP as well, and by forming a new party. The paper adds: Keshubhai has now come out of the BJP. Therefore, the ball is now in the court of the Congress. In any case, any political understanding with Keshubhai would harm the Congress. But if the Congress leaders are really clever, they would try to forge a hidden understanding with Keshubhai.
The daily Inquilab,in a two-part editorial on August 7-8,writes: Keshubhai has blamed Modi for becoming a Hitler… But he has not, even symbolically, criticised the terrible riots that have become the ugliest blot on the face of Modi because of which he is considered a criminal against law and justice and even against humanity… It should also be remembered that Keshubhai has, indeed, broken his links with the BJP but not with the saffron mindset.
