  • Vegetable vendor
    Constituency: Rohini
    Age: 60 years

Mangal Singh has been selling vegetables all his life and wants that the condition of the poor like him should improve. “The growth of the nation lies with the uplift of the poor, which should top the list of priorities,” he says.

It’s high time the government provided security and shelter to those living below the poverty line. He says it doesn’t matter what party comes to power, as long as their efforts are made for the public.

    On Inflation

“I have a family and my only source of income is my vegetable stall. Because of the increase in cost of vegetables, my earnings have fallen. It is getting difficult for me to run my house,” he says.

    On Security

“I have been living in Rohini for around 35 years now and I still don’t feel safe,” he says. Singh says the recent terror attacks in the city have made Delhi an unsafe place to live. “It’s the poor like me who die in these attacks,” he says.

    On Education

“I have two children and they are deprived of going to school just because I cannot pay the school fee,” he says. “Children are the future of this country and just because they belong to a poor family, they should not be neglected,” he says.

HighlightBy: TK Balu | 23-Nov-2008 Reply | Forward I was amazed to read the pitiable condition of Mangal Singh and his family. Of course, it is eternal truth that people like him, aum admi continue to be neglected to the core and more soaps etc. are offered to upper middle class who are becoming richer and richer! It is a pity and we all should feel ashamed that after 60 years of independence, we are still unable to secure 'roti, education and health' to aum admi. Let the political heads roll out, instead of crticising each other, what they intend to do for the said class in the next few years and how they propose to do it to implement their promises. Elections come and go and promises remain unfulfilled for ever and ever! Let's all rise together to remove poverty, illiteracy and make people healthy and wealthy, safe and secured in their dwellings and in public places and let their children be educated free of cost in Govt. and other schools to build up a new India, which our forefathers dreamt and sacrificed!
