From six-month certificate course in bartending to one-year diploma in sports management and a full-fledged two-year PG degree in golf management,these days Pune is offering new career options to those who dare to think beyond B-schools,law,engineering and medical sciences.
Flaming Trio Bartending Academy,with branches in Kolkata,Mumbai and Dubai,claims it has so far produced four 20-strong batches of bartenders. There was a time when bartending was not a recognised profession,nor a career option. But today with so many pubs and rest-o-bars mushrooming,this perception has changed, says Binny Dhadwal who started Flaming Trio.
Its not just about mixing drinks but also about entertainment. I am studying hotel management and plan to get into bartending as a profession, says Abhinay Pawar. Those who are willing to learn the tricks of the trade say Rs 22,500 they spent on fees can be easily recouped in less than a month.
With IPL becoming a money-spinner and Pune getting its own home team,the city is also gearing up to tackle streams like sports management. We felt the need for a full-fledged course in sports management. When international players come to India,they often complain of the event being poorly managed, says Vipul Lunawat,Director,Institute of Sports Science and Technology,Pune. This autonomous institute is registered with Maharashtra State Sports Council. Its one-year diploma will start in June and will charge Rs 15,000.
Meanwhile,being pitched as a niche learning experience is two-year residential course in golf management to be started in July this year for a fee of Rs 9 lakh.
Keshav Rae,Director,International School of Corporate Management (ISCOM),says,Golf is gaining recognition; almost 2-3 golf courses are opening in the country every year. We have roped in world leaders in this line – Elmwood College of St Andrews,Scotland.
Betting big on the student communitys penchant for offbeat courses is DSK Supinfocom that offers animation,videogame design and industrial design,all four-year courses,costing Rs 24 lakh. Says Malhar Shete,a first-year student of game designing,I chose game designing because it is more creative and I am a die-hard video game fan. It started two years ago with French collaboration.
There are around 2 lakh outstation students in the city,with about 20,000 from abroad.
Other courses in pipeline:
* Sports Fashon Designing (ISST)
