Wanted criminal arrested with fake police ID

Three members of the 'Dharmender Kirthal gang' wanted in several cases of murder, dacoity and carjacking across the NCR, were arrested by the Delhi Police Crime Branch.

"Sandeep Ahlawat (31), his cousin Varun Kumar (23) and Subhash Pahwa (53) were nabbed after we received a tip-off that Ahlawat would be driving through Dwarka in a stolen car with his associates on Monday evening," SBS Tyagi, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime and Railways), said.

A trap was laid around Janaki Chowk near Sector 22-23 crossing in Dwarka and a Maruti Ertiga was stopped for checking around 5 pm, police said.

When its occupants were asked to establish their identity, the person sitting next to the driver introduced himself as a Delhi Police constable and even produced an identity card.

Police said the identity card was a scanned copy and they apprehended the three. When their vehicle was searched, police recovered a semi-automatic pistol with cartridges.

The man who claimed to be the constable was Ahlawat, police said. The three told police that they had stolen the Maruti Ertiga at gunpoint in South Delhi's Vasant Kunj area recently.

"During questioning, Ahlawat told us that in 2001 he, Pahwa and Kumar had been arrested in a kidnapping case which had culminated in a conviction in 2009, but they had escaped," DCP Tyagi said. After their escape, police claimed, Ahlawat kept changing hideouts to evade police.

Seven held for extortion

NEW DELHI: Seven persons who posed as CBI personnel and extorted money from shopkeepers at Lahori Gate have been arrested. The seven have been identified as Sudhanshu, Saunder, Deshraj, Charan Singh, Dharmender, Sukhvir and Sardool. Police recovered two cars and fake identity cards. Police said the seven accused vendors of flouting market rules and threatened to lodge cases unless they paid a bribe.
