A Day after 26-year-old Ravi Mishra was arrested for the murder of his fiancee,he is learnt to have told the police that the victim was “putting pressure on him to get married for the last six months”.

Mishra,a call centre executive, allegedly smothered his fiance Monica Jaiswal to death on Wednesday night.

Officials said Mishra told interrogators that he had gone to Jaiswal’s rented accommodation in Madangir,Amebdkar Nagar,on Wednesday night to tell her that he would not be able to marry her. The wedding was scheduled for June 14 in a Kanpur court.

“Mishra said he told Jaiswal that he would not be able to marry her because his parents were against the match and that he was having second thoughts against defying them. His parents, based in Bihar, were also threatening to disown him,he told Jaiswal,” a senior police officer said. “The two had a heated argument then. Jaiswal reportedly broke down and started screaming. At this,he smothered her to death.”

Police said Mishra then locked Jaiswal’s home from outside and left. He later called up her parents in Kanpur and told them her door was locked from outside and that she was not answering her phone, the police added.

Jaiswal’s mother Sunita reportedly asked Mishra to check on her the next morning. On Thursday evening,he called up Sunita again and told her that the door was still locked and that he could not break open the doors because the neighbours were objecting to it. Jaiswal’s parents arrived in Delhi on Friday morning; the three,Jaiswal’s parents and Mishra, broke open her apartment’s door and found her dead.

A senior police officer said Mishra was interrogated after Jaiswal’s house keys were found from his residence. Her call records also revealed she had spoken to him last.

Mishra has confessed to the crime, the officer added.
