As water cut looms large over the city, political parties have opposed any such move by the Irrigation department or the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC).
The civic administration and the Irrigation department have been jointly discussing the existing status of water storage in dams that supply water to the city.
To ensure that there is no shortage of water to the city as earlier this year, the officials of both the irrigation department and the PMC have been planning for proper management of available water.
The civic administration is already implementing water cut of 10 per cent and the decision to extend it further would be taken up jointly with the Irrigation department.
The ruling NCP along with the Congress has announced their opposition to any move of extending water cut. “There is sufficient water storage in the reservoirs that supply water to the city. Water cut is already in existence and increasing it further will not be accepted,” said Congress leader Virendra Kirad.
The city Congress will discuss the issue with Chief Minister Ashok Chavan.
The MNS staged a protest in front of district Irrigation office to protest against the proposed increase in water cut to 15 per cent. “There was 92 per cent rainfall this year and storage meets the demand of the drinking water needs of the city. The water cut has continued despite good availability,” Dhangekar said.
The unequal distribution of water has added to the sufferings of many with part of the city getting good supply while others unable to get sufficient supply to meet its need, he said.BJP corporator Ujjwal Keskar said that his party would not allow increase in water cut for the city even when the collection was better in the dams.
