WB govt to take up armed escorts for some trains with rlys

The West Bengal government said it would take up with the Railways the issue of initiating security measures, including armed escort, for 35 trains running daily on the Kharagpur and Jamshedpur divisions.

In the wake of stoppage of the Delhi-bound Rajdhani Express by Maoist-backed tribals, the West Bengal government today said it would take up with the Railways the issue of initiating security measures, including armed escort, for 35 trains running daily on the Kharagpur and Jamshedpur divisions.

“Daily 35 trains, including eight to ten long distance ones, pass through these areas. The situation demands armed escorts, pilot engines and sanitising of tracks to be ensured for them,” Home Secretary Ardhendu Sen told reporters here.

Stating that such measures were in place in the ultra-affected areas of Chhatisgarh,Assam and the Northeast,Sen said: “We are considering such measures in trains in our state. A 42-45 km stretch between Kharagpur and Chandil is the most vulnerable.” The Home Secretary, however, admitted the measures were resource-intensive. He was speaking after a meeting convened by Chief Secretary Ashok Mohan Chakraborty to review security provided to the Railways.
