WB Govt’s ‘indifference’ to blame for Maoist problem: PC

Home Minister P Chidambaram said West Bengal Govt by its 'indifference' had allowed Maoists to take a strong hold there in the last 10 years.

As security forces continued their push against naxals in Lalgarh,the Centre alleged West Bengal’s “indifference” had allowed Maoists to strengthen their presence in the state.

Asked by reporters about the Maoists problem in West Bengal,Union Home Minister P Chidambaram said the state government by its ‘indifference’,had allowed Maoists to take a strong hold there in the last 10 years. “We will soon end the problem…We will take control of all Maoists villages in the state. It is only a matter of days. It is a ten-year problem.. The solution cannot be found in 10 days.”

“We have asked paramilitary forces to move slowly as there is the possibility of mines being laid by the Maoists,” Chidambaram said.

The Home Minister described as not true the charge that Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee had links with the Maoists.

Wiping out cross-border terror,ending violence in North Eastern states and stopping communal clashes are among the priorities of the UPA governmnent in the internal security front,he said.

Chidambaram said his ministry had prepared a 120-day plan to tighten internal security and develop the police force.

He said the Home Ministry would allocate money for necessary sections after the budget. There was a need to increase paramilitary forces and strengthen police forces in various states. “We are ready to extend any help to state governments,” he said.
