India have got a foreign coach, but the Nigerian striker feels the improvement should be at the grassroots. “The main problems lie with the coaches who are working at the the grassroots. They should get the right coaches to work with young kids. The association should invest more money on quality coaches and then we will get to see changes. The knowledge is very limited and most of the coaches don’t have scientific knowledge,” Chima said.
Despite having players like Baichung Bhutia, Sunil Chettri, NP Pradeep to name a few, Chima says that players don’t play 100 per cent on the field.
“The players play only 50 per cent of their ability. If they take the initiative then they can give tough competition to any side in the world,” he said.
And he gives a reasoning to it also. “I think the motivational factor, the inner belief, is missing. You look at the I-League now — it’s mostly the foreign players that are scoring. When you have an opportunity to perform against foreign players in your own league, why don’t players grab the opportunity?” Chima added.
There is no doubt about the fact that India has enough talent but the right steps are not taken towards harnessing the potential that we have.
“There is no doubt that India has talented players but then we have to utilise it.
“All that is being done are talks and talks and more talks but nothing is being done on ground. The officials should play their part if they are planning something for the betterment of soccer. Also the spirit of excelling in missing in the players,” Chima said.
