We need real austerity

Austerity is tough for those who have become accustomed to the high life, corporate style. Private planes, five-star hotels, expensive foreign cars, watches that can cost as much as an Indian farmer makes in a lifetime. These are just some of the small fringe benefits that Indian politicians enjoy. So now that they are being forced to return to more ‘socialist’ ways, they chafe and lose their sense of humour. Or why would there be such a fuss over Shashi Tharoor tweeting unhappily about travelling ‘cattle class’? It is a well-known colloquialism for travelling economy and poor Shashi has suffered enough, deprived as he has been of his suite at the Taj.

What puzzles me is why nobody notices that when he moves into his government accommodation, Indian taxpayers will be paying for him to live in much greater style. The Taj Mahal Hotel is a cheap hostel compared to living in a bungalow in Lutyens’ Delhi. Only the richest Indians can live in the style in which our senior politicians and officials live. And, as I have suggested in this space before, the real sacrifice that our politicians can make is to surrender their palatial houses in Lutyens’ Delhi and move into lesser accommodation. If security is a problem, then Cabinet ministers can move into the cottages that already exist on the grounds of Rashtrapati Bhavan, as can Sonia Gandhi and her family. I repeat ad nauseam that we can no longer afford for our politicians and bureaucrats to live like billionaires, but since I cannot see this change happening in my lifetime, may I humbly suggest other austerity measures that would really make a difference.

Let us sell Air India instead of pumping thousands more crores of taxpayers’ money into an airline that can never improve. When this is done, let us sell Doordarshan or at least stop wasting money on its unwatched and unwatchable English channels. Then let us close down the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting. It is a relic from a time when information could be controlled and when the average Indian could not distinguish between news and propaganda. It has been irrelevant since satellite TV arrived and is now watched only by those unlucky Indians who have not yet been given the choice of cable and satellite TV.

When the Prime Minister has rid us of obviously useless public enterprises, he should set the Planning Commission the task of listing the public sector companies that have become bottomless pits for taxpayers’ money. Let us sell them and if the commies start ranting and raging about selling the ‘family silver’, let them be offered first to the Government of West Bengal. If decades of socialism have taught us one thing, it is that the dead hand of government must be kept firmly away from the business and service sectors. What better reason than an austerity drive to sell useless government companies? The money thus saved can be invested into a massive new programme to build infrastructure.

Indian farmers do not need cosmetic drought relief; they need real infrastructure to help them escape their shameful, hideous poverty. They need roads that would lead to new markets so that half of what they grow would no longer rot. They need irrigation facilities that would stop their reliance on the monsoon. And, they need water management techniques that would help them better use every drop of water they get. What difference is it going to make if the Minister of Agriculture and Sonia Gandhi travel Economy and if sweet, austere Rahul baba takes a train to Ludhiana that gets stoned en route? He is a sweet fellow though. I loved the way he pointed to his simple, white kurta on national television and said, dimpling proudly, ‘I am always austere. Politicians should always be austere.’

He is right. Politicians should always be austere, since they are there to lead by example. But, so should governance. We could even afford for our politicians to be reckless and extravagant if they would help cut down the cost of governance. There are thousands of ways in which government could curb spending on routine administration and we never, ever hear about them.

It is outrageous that nearly all our money goes towards paying salaries and that mostly the people we employ to run our country are clerks. Why does it surprise us that India is today one of the worst run countries in the world? Why does it surprise us that even when it comes to something as serious as austerity, all that our leaders can come up with are token gestures that they hope will make them look good in the eyes of starving farmers. In these hard times we need more than gestures. We need real austerity.

AusterityBy: Muralee | 26-Sep-2009 Reply | Forward It is surprising that in our beloved country the Tax Sleuths never lay their hands on the illegal wealth of the politicians or even care to expose their nefarious activities. The long arms of law reaches only the pittance earned by the average middle class. If only the billions of ill begotten wealth earned by the so called people's netas like M/s. Mayawati, M.Yadav, Commie leaders like Pinarayi, Karat, Kodiyeri .... are confiscated/taxed, poverty could be wiped from the Country and we could have world class infrastructure!!! Utopian Dream!!!
Austerity and our NetasBy: Dr. A. Kumar, England | 25-Sep-2009 Reply | Forward Why everyone is whinging ? In a country where Netas have contempt for electorate whom they treat like dirt and slaves. Just look at the way they surround themselves with armed bodyguards and travel in bulletproof cars. They protect themselves from the people who made them what they are. Not only that, when they travel, they close the roads and drive through red traffic lights. We all love luxury, more so if it is paid for by others(Indian voters). Unless Indians are thick and stupid, how else one can explain such people occupying position of power and influence? Will things change in India ? I don't think so. Kleptocracy and dynastic rule has taken deep roots in the soil. In the current climate, it is just simply not possible. I marvel at the tolerance of Indian people. But the answer I get is not tolerance but stupidity.
AUSTERITY AND SECURITYBy: Niranjan | 22-Sep-2009 Reply | Forward OUR ERSTWHILE NETAs AND POLITICIANS WILL HIDE BEHIND THE SECURITY AND WILL ESCHEW AUSTERITY. DOES A NETA NEED 10 OR 15 COMMANDOS TO SECURE HIM? HOWEVER, IN CASE OF A HUMAN BOMB, NOTHING CAN PROTECT THE POLITICIAN. ALSO, HIGH POWERED RIFLE (LIKE IN KENNEDY ASSASSINATION) CAN OVERRIDE ANY TYPE OF SECURITY. SO SECURITY IS NOT AN EXCUSE FOR NOT BEING AUSTERE!
I got a kick out of your articleBy: Biren Kantharia | 21-Sep-2009 Reply | Forward Your article is as good as Partida Elegante Tequila. You write from heart. Absolute. As Sudheendra Kulkarni mentioned 'flow theory' in his article 'Why Sachin’s bat speaks to him. Your article is resolute in flow theory. I hope our 'tanmay' and 'tallen' politicians read these exceptional articles from Talveen Singh and Suddhendra Kulkarni. Awesome subtle learning for me as well from two greats of Indian Express !!!!
Focus on progress with real austerity; do not distract India's attention to peanut savings / austerityBy: Dushyant Vachhani | 20-Sep-2009 Reply | Forward These steps are surely good taken by government; but simple question how many years did they (politicians) take to realise this; are they so innocent or straight foward. I guess they are as straight as 'jalebi' sweet. So MPs and MLAs get real, do not take these steps for retaining power at center and state, rather get real progress for every citizen of India. So whatever you follow make sure every Govt Employee also follows and same applies to your family members spending tax money on various activities mentioned in this space by Talveenji as well as other columnists time and again. Do good, good things will happen to you!
