  • Though we all claim to be sensitive towards the needs of the society, proving your concern with actions requires dedication and will. This is what 51-year-old Avinash Sikka has been doing for the past 13 years. A sales executive at a book-shop in the Books Market, he actively works for solemnising the marriages of needy girls with the help of Ma Bhagwati Club, a non-government organisation.

Sikka said, “One day I was sitting with my friends and discussing the problems being faced by the poor. I suggested to my friends that we should hold jagrans and solemnise the marriage of needy girls with the help of donations. As I work in the sales field, I have established contacts with people who are willing to donate.”

“By now we have solemnised the marriages of 250 girls of more than 15 villages of the district. We also give 42 household items to the bride. Earlier, we used to arrange one marriage in a year, but now we arrange one every quarter of the year, irrespective of the caste, creed or religion that the girl belongs to.”

Apart from organising marriages, the NGO also holds medical camps in the city. “I appeal to the public to donate money for holding medical camps in the memory of their elders. Anyone can contact me at 9872831135. Although, the cost incurred to hold a medical camp is around Rs 5,000, even a penny is welcome.”
